Campgrounds Duel Basics

Sorry for the late post guys, been busy.

Today I’m gonna talk about a popular duel map, some of which include DM6 (Campgrounds), ZTN (Bloodrun), and Lost World. Bloodrun is currently played in more than 50% of duel matches, while DM6 used to be the most popular map, but has gotten overplayed and is not nearly as popular as before, but I will be talking about it today. It also has a few distinct advantages, and this includes map control. It’s next to impossible to regain map control on DM6 due to the size and layout of the map. There are only 3 powerups on the map, and they are all easily accessible by doing a simple patrol from the third level and drop down to grab them. If you find yourself facing against an enemy who has control, the best idea would be to make good use of the armor shards near the Lightning Gun, and to try to grab yellow armors and use the railgun to get some hits on the enemy when they try to grab Red or Mega. If you can pull off one or two good rails and get Yellow and shards you may a good chance at being able to finish off your enemy and to regain control. However, you must be careful to not have this backfire and have your enemy waiting for you to rail and then decimating you. Try to keep yourself invisible and walk instead of strafing to stay silent, and wait for the enemy to pick up the powerup and unleash a nicely aimed rail gun shot, to basically negate the effect of the powerup they just picked up. This may take a lot of practice, so I’d recommend playing an InstaGib gamemode to get better at aiming the Railgun.

Now there is a lot more to learn on this map, including some essential jumps like Bridge to Rail and Pillar Skip, but we’ll talk about that later. Thanks for reading!

Basic Settings

I’m gonna help you guys out with some basic settings that will help your game in Quake Live. These settings are all used by professionals in the game because of the greater visibility, maneuverability, and so much more. Many of the settings are the same or very similar to Quake 3. Here are a few commands that are very useful for the game:

  • seta cg_bob “0″ – removes the annoying move bobbing which can help increase your accuracy and attention
  • seta cg_autoswitch “2″ – you do not switch your gun when you pick up a new one, which can mess up your firing
  • seta cg_kickscale “0″ – your screen does not bounce or shake when you get damaged
  • seta cg_newWeaponBar “1″ – keeps your weapons and ammo on the left side so you always have a visual of your counts
  • seta cg_truelightning “0.75″ - changes how your lightning gun shoots, 0 lag compensates, 1 is stiff. 0.75 is a great setting for this
  • seta r_picmip “5” – between, 0 – 10, changes level of detail of walls. 0 is the highest.
  • seta r_vertexlight “1″ - turns on vertex lighting that should give you better FPS and more stable
  • seta cg_fov “110” - field of vision, the higher it is, the more “fish-eyed” your vision is and how much you can see. I use 120, which is considered very high, but 110 is used the most
  • seta cg_noprojectiletrail “1” - removes smoke trails on weapons which increases visibility
  • seta cg_leveltimerdirection “0″ - with a setting of 0, the timer goes up, with 1 it goes down. Most use count up.
  • cg_crosshairBrightness “1″ – Changes the opacity of the crosshair, keep it 1, the maximum opacity
  • seta r_drawSun “0″ - removes the sun
  • seta cg_drawGun  “2″ - 0 hides weapons, 1 shows it with swaying, while 2 shows it without swaying
  • seta r_dynamiclight “0” - removes weapon flashes and stuff that can be distracting
  • seta cg_switchOnEmpty “1″ - setting of 1 switches the gun when you’re empty, while 2 doesn’t
  • seta s_ambient “0” – turn off distracting ambient sound
  • seta cg_forceTeamModel “Mynx” – force team models to be the same
  • seta cg_forceEnemyModel “tankjr/bright” – force enemy models to be same and much more visible

These settings are great and will help you out in your gameplay for sure. Use the suggested settings I put.

Quake Live Introduction

Quake Live is the reiteration of a timeless competitive and fast-paced FPS by the name of Quake 3 Arena, which was created by id Software and built on the ID Tech 3 Engine. It’s a relatively popular game, and was one of the most played of its time for its great game mechanics, skill-based firefights, and incredible benchmark setting graphics that strained even the most powerful of systems. Now the game has been transformed into a free-to-play (with option for subscription P2P gaming) browser based frag fest that combines a lot of social features to make the game even more popular than before. What you have is a diverse fanbase and playerbase that differs by skill levels and you are matched with people at your skill to ensure a fair and fun game.

Pretty slick interface that uses visual cues like colors and checkmarks to determine your skill level compared to the match

The game is super fast-paced, magnitudes faster than Call of Duty or Halo, and is a super intense game. Get ready for some adrenaline rushes when you’re playing some tougher gamemodes like Duels and Clan Arena. I’ll talk more about the specifics of the game later, but I recommend checking it out, signing up now, and practicing a bit. You’ll need it, this is a whole different breed of First Person Shooter than what most mainstream gamers are used to. See you in the Arena.
